Class of The Week – Yoga

Our final class of the week in the month of August is Yoga. Yoga, in terms  of its history has the biggest timeline. It has been stated that yoga began over 5,000 years ago [1]. There have been four periods throughout history and, still to this day remained an important aspects of exercise routine [2]. At Riverside we offer a number of classes throughout the week, make sure to come down and try out one of our yoga classes.

There are a number of benefits that come with doing yoga, including:

  • Helps to increase flexibility, by going to yoga classes you will soon become more flexible the more regularly you go [3].
  • With this, it will also help to build muscle strength whilst also remaining flexible. Therefore you are ensuring the likelihood of back pain will be reduced[4].
  • Moreover, it has been scientifically indicated that yoga can decrease stress and help increase relaxation [5].
  • Furthermore, it may lead to reduction in inflammation diseases, therefore some studies have shown that yoga has made indication towards reducing inflammatory makers in the body, which can lead to reducing pro-inflammatory diseases [6]. This is still in development though.
  • Finally, it has been indicated that by partaking in yoga classes can reduce blood pressure[7].
